About Mississippi State

Mississippi is a southern U.S. state with the Mississippi River to its west, the state of Alabama to its east, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Its Mississippi Delta region is considered the birthplace of blues music, honored at the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale. Also in the region is the Vicksburg National Military Park, preserving the site of a critical Civil War battle.

Mississippi, constituent state of the United States of America. Its name derives from a Native American word meaning “great waters” or “father of waters.” Mississippi became the 20th state of the union in 1817. Jackson is the state capital.

Mississippi Flag

U.S. state flag consisting of unequal vertical stripes of red, gold, and blue, with a central white and gold magnolia blossom encircled by 20 white stars, one gold star, and the motto “In God We Trust.”

The current flag of Mississippi was adopted on January 11, 2021. The flag features a white magnolia blossom and the words “In God We Trust” on a red field with a gold-bordered blue pale. It replaces the previous flag that displayed the Confederate battle insignia in the upper left hand corner, which was retired on June 30, 2020.
